Solution Details

Multiple clients can log on to the server and create multiple instances such as Windows, shell, and Explorer.exe on the server. The 'MaxMpxCt' registry key enables the server to present a suggested maximum number of simultaneous client requests to it and then limit those requests. The 'System could not log you on' error occurs while connecting to the server. To resolve the error, 'MaxMpxCt' and 'MaxWorkItem' registry values should be modified.
To resolve the error:
1) Click 'Start' and click 'Run'. (The 'Run' dialog box appears.)

2) In the 'Open' box, enter 'regedit'. (The 'Registry Editor' window appears.)

  CAUTION: Making incorrect changes in the registry can cause serious problems that may require re-installation of the operating system.
3) From the tree view, expand 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'.
4) Expand 'SYSTEM'.
5) Expand 'CurrentControlSet'.
6) Expand 'Services'.
7) Expand 'LanmanServer'.
8) Expand 'Parameters'.
9) Select the 'MaxMpxCt' key.
10) From the 'Edit' menu, click 'Modify'.
11) In the 'Value data' box, enter the value '1024'.
12) Click 'OK'.
13) Select the 'MaxWorkItems' key.
14) From the 'Edit' menu, click 'Modify'.
15) In the 'Value data' box, enter the value '4096'.
  NOTE: Ensure that this value is at least four times as large as the 'MaxMpxCt' value.
16) Click 'OK'.
